Enjoying Summer with Your Dog
Summertime is upon us, and that means the days are longer. Many of us enjoy the later sunsets during the summer months that allow us more time to do fun things after the workday is through. Our Longwood Veterinary Center team has come up with some great ideas to help you enjoy summer with your dog!
1- Go for a Swim!–
Take your pup for a dip in a pool, lake, or creek to beat the heat. You’ll love going for a swim, and your dog may enjoy it too. If your dog enjoys swimming, it’ll be a great way to enjoy the outdoors, get in some physical exercise, and also spend some time together doing something fun. Contact us to confirm your dog is up to date on their Leptospirosis vaccine, a must have prevention for water loving dogs.
2- Enjoy a Frozen Treat–
Keep your dog busy while helping him cool off with a delicious pupsicle! There are lots of easy DIY recipes for frozen dog treats your pup will go nuts over. Check out these recipes, and try one for your furry friend this summer.
3- DOGcation–
Who’s to say you can’t take a vacation with your canine BFF? You absolutely can. Find a beach house or cabin rental that allows pets to stay too, and start packing your bags. It’ll be so fun to take a break from everyday life, stay somewhere different, and explore with your pup.
4- Summer School for Dogs–
Regardless of the old saying, you actually can teach an old dog new tricks. Summer is a great time to focus on training your favorite pup. You can set up an agility course in the yard with household items– boxes, ropes, hula hoops– and work with your dog on coordination, and other skills. Many local trainers offer in person and online classes. Visit our website for a list of local dog trainers that use positive reinforcement to help you meet your training goals.
5– Enjoy longer walks–
With sundown occurring later in the day during the summer months, you have plenty of extra daylight to enjoy long strolls with your dog. It’s a win/win because you’ll get some exercise, you can enjoy the fresh air, and you can wear out your dog so he will sleep like a baby.
No matter how you spend your season, our team at Longwood Veterinary Center hopes you’ll find fun ways to enjoy the summer with your pup. Just make sure you don’t let them get overheated or become dehydrated in the process. As always, we’re here for you if you need anything at all. Happy summer, friends!
