Dental Care

Animal Dental Center in Kennett Square

Healthy teeth are about more than fresh breath. Dental disease can cause pain, infection, tooth loss, and long-term health problems for dogs and cats. That’s why Longwood Veterinary Center offers professional, thorough pet dental care through our dedicated Animal Dental Center in Kennett Square.

We combine modern dental technology, advanced training, and compassionate care to help your pet stay comfortable, healthy, and protected for the long haul.

Why Pet Dental Care Matters

“Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats and is entirely preventable. By three years of age, most dogs and cats have some evidence of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease includes gingivitis, inflammation of the gums, and periodontitis, loss of bone and soft tissue around the teeth. There is a wide range in the appearance and severity of periodontal disease, which often cannot be properly evaluated or treated without general anesthesia for veterinary patients.”

— American Veterinary Dental College

Dental disease is extremely common, and the tricky part is that it often starts quietly. Many pets continue eating normally even when their mouths are painful. Routine exams and professional cleanings allow us to catch issues early, before they become serious.

State-of-the-Art Animal Dental Center Technology

Longwood Veterinary Center is proud to offer a state-of-the-art Animal Dental Center equipped with advanced tools designed specifically for safe, effective veterinary dentistry, including:

  • Ultrasonic scaling equipment for thorough cleaning above and below the gumline
  • High- and low-speed dental drilling equipment for dental treatments and extractions when needed
  • Digital dental X-rays to evaluate tooth roots, bone health, and hidden infection

Dental X-rays are an essential part of complete pet dental care, because many painful issues happen below the gumline, where they cannot be seen during a visual exam.

What to Expect During a Dental Procedure

Every dental patient receives a complete oral assessment performed by the attending doctor. Because pets cannot safely sit still for dental cleaning and diagnostics, dental procedures are performed under general anesthesia with close monitoring.

During your pet’s visit to our Animal Dental Center, we will:

  1. Perform a comprehensive oral exam
  2. Take diagnostic dental radiographs (X-rays) as needed
  3. Chart findings and evaluate the health of the gums and teeth
  4. Scale and polish the teeth to remove plaque and tartar
  5. Treat dental disease and remove problem teeth when medically necessary
  6. Provide a customized treatment and prevention plan

Our goal is always the same: protect your pet’s comfort now and prevent dental disease from progressing in the future.

A Highly Trained Veterinary Dental Team

To support our veterinarians, Longwood Veterinary Center has a select team of nurses who have completed a comprehensive program through the Animal Dental Training Program of Baltimore.

These nurses are highly trained and proficient in:

  • Dental charting
  • Scaling and polishing
  • Capturing high-quality diagnostic dental radiographs

Our team continues to build expertise each year through ongoing education, including lectures and hands-on wet labs. This commitment ensures every patient receives consistent, high-quality pet dental care at every visit.

Your Pet’s Custom Dental Prevention Plan

After your pet’s mouth is assessed and treated, the doctor will provide a personalized dental treatment and prevention plan based on your dog or cat’s specific needs.

This may include:

  • Home care recommendations
  • Recheck timelines
  • Product suggestions
  • Long-term prevention strategies

No two mouths are the same, and the best dental plan is the one your pet can realistically maintain.

Pet Dental Care at Home (What Works Best)

The most effective way to support your pet’s oral health between professional cleanings is simple:

Brush your pet’s teeth regularly

We know, we know. It sounds ambitious. But even a few times per week can make a real difference over time.

To help, we’ve included step-by-step brushing guides below.
